As it turned out, this past weekend I had a blast at my 20-year high school reunion. It was the first reunion I ever attended.
The bar was open, the hors d'oeuvres served up, and the DJ had the party pumping. But the thing that made it different from most any other social event I've been to...the crazy part...was the people. It was a sort of This is Your Life gallery, from kindergarten through high school, and somehow all the faces had morphed into someone new. Your senses constantly assailed by all these classmates from different parts of your youth. To your left is the kid you used to kick stones with while walking to elementary school; to your right is the girl you had a crush on in middle school; meanwhile the guy offering you a beer was the high school kid who once would have tried to beat you up just for looking at him funny.
They're all right there in one room, and there are more of them coming through the door. Lots more. They're in the bathroom, by the bar, at your table. People you haven't seen in two decades, people who knew you long before you became whoever it is you have become. Then you start to think just how long it's been and you hear the names of the half dozen or so classmates who never made it out of the '90's and you start to wonder.
It was beyond bizarre, but the trick was not to dwell on the madness of it all but instead just to get out there on the floor and have a good time. And that we did.
Sure, count me in for next time.
