Where were you?

On this day in 1986 I walked into freshman ethics class at SHU and my friend Ed Haran told me the space shuttle had blown up. I didn't believe him, but it was true.

So earlier in the week, around 11 PM, there was a blinding flash of light, then a deafening crack of thunder! So I sprang from my bed--in true Clement C. Moore fashion--to see what was the matter. And what to my wondering eyes should appear? Why it's thundersnow!

This weekend we got outside and explored the forbidden wilderness of High Point in Oakland.

We found numerous glacial erratic boulders to clamber on, as well as some strange relics, such as an old rusted tricycle sitting upon a rock in the middle of nowhere, and a pile of bleached white bones.

But when the sun starts to set, around 4:00 PM, the tendrils of darkness begin to creep through the woods. That's when you know it's time to get out.

Well I couldn't think of a better way to spend a Friday night. Tonight was the annual Girl Scout square dance! I did the "do-si-do" and the "promendade" all while sportin' my Hog's Breath straw cowboy hat and bandana. We finished up the night by going a little crazy and hitting DQ. Somebody stop me!

Happy birthday to the master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. I've always been a big fan and for the past several years I've enjoyed reading about this mysterious Poe ritual. I've also been maintaining one of my own. Tonight, when the night is mine, and the cold winds whip through the skeletal trees, I'll take down my leatherbound collection of Poe's works, pour a little brandy, and read The Tell-Tale Heart.

Perhaps you'll join me?

Last week I had a fun time on KPAM radio. Thanks to Rich Patterson, producer, and Tom Parker, afternoon host, for a great discussion on online fraud. My brother-in-law recorded it so if I get around to it I might post the audio file. Meanwhile, "Bookends" in Ridgewood just ordered more copies of the book, so why not pick one up?
