As the leaves turn crimson and grinning pumpkins appear on doorsteps I enjoy catching up on scary movies and books. The current tome on my nightstand is the Bram Stoker classic Dracula. The tricky thing about reading it is trying to put aside an entire century of overused interpretations from the eerie Nosferatu to the loveable, purple, monocle-wearing muppet. I have to force myself not to read passages such as, "Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!" without that Bela Lugosi accent.

However, the description of the castle is quite vivid and delivers a realistic sense of foreboding and creepiness. You would not want to be a guest there. And some of the vampiric seduction scenes in the book must have raised quite a few eyebrows back in 1897.

As the novel opens, a clerk named Harker is dispatched from London to a mysterious castle, perched high in the Carpathian mountains, to handle some business transactions for Count Dracula. During his stay as a guest of the count, Harker begins noticing strange things, all devices to foreshadow his host's true undead identity. There are no mirrors to be found anywhere in the castle and the wolves always keep a respectful distance. Hmm... Dracula always declines food, and he is mysteriously absent during the day. Uh-oh. To the modern reader this foreshadowing is largely lost as we are all in on the joke. But to Harker, it is all new and unsettling, and it is enjoyable to see the horror of it all unfold through his eyes.

The perfect manly dinner. James Bond would certainly approve.

I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I love broccoli, brussels sprouts, asparagus, and spinach. I make a mean fruit smoothie, too. But every so often I need to indulge the carnivore within.
