Kids growing up in the 70's knew Evel Knievel. He was the ultimate showman and rebel. In a pale imitation we rode our dirt bikes off ramps. We played with the bendable action figure and placed it on the matching "stunt cycle", wound it up, and sent him over all sorts of impossible obstacles mimicking the real-life exploits of the famous daredevil. Evel Knievel--he attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon in his "Sky Cycle"--it didn't matter whether or not he succeeded, it was the point of the whole thing...just doing it was what counted. His trademark all American white and blue star-emblazoned suit, the stories that he'd broken every bone in his body--(twice!)--all supported the legend. Today we learned that he's gone. In today's child-sheltered world who knows if kids will have anyone like that to look up to.

Thanks, Evel, hopefully you've made that last great leap across the sky.

Today, the wife of millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett has petitioned the court to declare him legally dead. It's amazing that one can still crash an aircraft in many areas of the world and remain completely undiscovered. As a fellow Breitling owner, I'm disappointed Fossett was unable to activate the beacon on his "Emergency."

I don't get out to the movies often these days, so I was pleased that Enchanted turned out to be well worth seeing. It's right up there with Disney's best; had it been made decades ago, Julie Andrews could have played the singing lead (instead she narrates this one).

I caught the first show of the 75th anniversary Radio City Christmas Spectacular. While the beginning of November might seem a tad early for Christmas, once inside the venue the good cheer was in full gear. From 3-D special effects to the snow-laden, Santa-themed musical numbers it was an enjoyable show. It was also refreshing to see the true meaning of Christmas was not neglected. A real Nativity scene, with live animals, beneath a shining Christmas star.

But the Rockettes, of course, are the entertainment stars of the show. The precision, and talent, is nothing short of amazing. You realize you are being treated to the best of the best. These are people who are not sitting on the sidelines of life but are right up there, putting it all on the kick line show after show. An unfathomable amount of practice must be involved to attain the complete uniformity of the dance choreography. The toy soldier number was my favorite.

After the show we saw the tree being raised at Rockefeller Center and then grabbed a tasty lunch at Peters Gourmet Diner (between 83 and 84th on First Avenue).

I've got the Yule log on early this year.
